I honest to god just managed to ask a question about pegging at a microbiology conference and this is either the zenith or nadir of my scientific career.
Sixthlight

aaand the follow-up [sauce link]:

"For these two anons, and everybody who’s messaged me wanting to know what the actual story is behind the Scientifically Relevant Pegging Question:

The setting was a microbial ecology conference. The speaker (who I will not name, but is a distinguished and very cool lady and was giving the opening plenary for the day) was talking about her work on the interaction between the gut microbiome and HIV infection. They thought they’d found a correlation between a particular genus of microbe becoming much more common in the gut and HIV, but discovered there was a confounding factor: all the patients for whom this was true were in the MSM (men who have sex with men, used because many don’t identify as gay/bi/etc) group. So she hypothesised that their might be something about their behaviour - which included unprotected anal sex, hence their HIV - that caused this change in the gut microbiome.

The first questioner asked if she had any hypotheses for this, and she said it might be a bunch of things, including diet, but she did wonder if semen might stimulate unusual microbial activity, since it’s full of sugars and proteins and a bunch of other things. (The sugars are why it’s sticky, folks.)

I was the second questioner, so I asked if they’d looked at heterosexual couples who had anal sex, as a comparison. She said they hadn’t found any women with a similar gut microbiome phenotype, so I clarified that I was particularly thinking of heterosexual couples who had penetrative anal sex using artificial penetration, because that would be a great control for her semen hypothesis; no worries about condoms ripping or anything.

The room may or may not have gone a bit quiet.

She said that would be a good control, and talked about the difficulties of a) getting ethical permission to add questions to the study, and b) getting people to answer them truthfully, and then the moderator wrapped it up with “WELL WE ALL LEARNED SOMETHING, DIDN’T WE” and moved hastily on.

I was sitting at the front of the room so I don’t actually know what people’s faces looked like, but I am informed the room was pretty well split between “I WAS THINKING IT BUT BOY AM I GLAD SOMEBODY ELSE SAID IT” and “TODAY I LEARNED A THING ABOUT HUMAN SEXUALITY I DID NOT PREVIOUSLY KNOW”, which is really what we strive for in academic conferences, right? Right."
